Matthew A. Mauro, MD, was named chair of the RSNA Board of Directors for 2021. Dr. Mauro is president of the University of North Carolina (UNC) Faculty Physicians, where he is responsible for the professional clinical activities at the UNC Medical Center. Additionally, Dr. Mauro serves as senior executive for UNC Health Care System Revenue Cycle. Dr. Mauro holds the Ernest H. Wood Distinguished Professorship in the Department of Radiology at the UNC School of Medicine and is a professor of surgery. He has been a faculty member at UNC since 1982.

As RSNA chair, Dr. Mauro will lead the board in advancing patient care through educational programs, supporting scientific discovery through the R&E Foundation and providing the premier forum for scientific dissemination.

“Our goal for the coming year is to evolve and innovate our scientific and educational platforms to solidify RSNA’s position as radiology’s preeminent organization in radiologic sciences,” Dr. Mauro said.  “We find ourselves in an environment with new demands and requirements on the manner in which we disseminate and transmit information. It is a distinct honor to be named chair of the RSNA Board of Directors.”

A dedicated RSNA volunteer, he served on the Scientific Program Committee since 2005, and as chair from 2009 to 2013. Dr. Mauro served on the Public Information Advisors Network from 2002 to 2011. He has been on the RSNA Board of Directors since 2016, most recently serving as liaison for education. Dr. Mauro is a regular faculty member for annual meeting educational courses and was the associate editor of Radiology from 2002 to 2007. He has served as an R&E Foundation grant reviewer since 1992 and has previously been a member of the R&E Foundation’s Public Relations Committee and Corporate Giving Subcommittee.

Dr. Mauro completed his medical degree at the Cornell University Medical College, New York City. After completing a residency at the UNC School of Medicine, he completed fellowships in diagnostic and vascular radiology at UNC, and abdominal and interventional radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis.

A prolific researcher, his interests include interventional oncology, venous access, embolotherapy, the management of vascular malformations and stent grafts. He has contributed extensively to the scientific literature, in particular publishing research in dialysis access, venous intervention, stenting and the evolving field of interventional oncology.

Dr. Mauro has co-authored five books and written dozens of book chapters, as well as over 150 journal articles. He is a frequent invited lecturer, and his textbook, Image-Guided Interventions, serves as a standard reference in the field. Dr. Mauro has served on a number of editorial boards, been a manuscript reviewer and been a book reviewer for several journals.

Dr. Mauro is a past president of the Society for Interventional Radiology (SIR) and chairman of the SIR Foundation. He is a past president of the Southeastern Angiographic Society. He has served on the Board of Chancellors of the American College of Radiology and served on the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions Program Committee, as well as the Executive Committee. At the American Board of Radiology (ABR), he served on the Board of Governors, the Executive Committee and as a trustee.

He was awarded the gold medal in 2014 by SIR. The ABR has presented Dr. Mauro with both the Distinguished Service Award and the Lifetime Service Award.
