What causes Mach bands in radiography?
(c) Sharp object borders. Mach bands are not an artifact but a visual illusion. This illusion is a form of edge enhancement created by lateral inhibition of bipolar neurons in the retina by horizontal cells. Mach bands are apparent bright and dark lines that occur at the border between objects with different optical densities, contrast levels, or luminances.
