An effective quality control program in CT should include a daily water phantom scan to catch potential artifacts and HU value miscalibrations before they become clinically significant.
Do oral contrast agents affect attenuation correction in PET imaging?
(b) Only positive oral contrast agents have an effect. Barium or iodine-based (positive) oral contrast agents can cause attenuation correction (AC) artifacts, while water-based (negative) oral contrast agents generally do not. It should be noted that the use of oral contrast media generally do not cause clinically significant attenuation artifacts. However, if there is any reason to suspect that FDG activity on an AC-PET image is due to oral agent contrast, review of the non-AC PET images in these instances is crucial.
